ABOUT ABOUT

The Beauty of Pain: A Butoh Performance
Dance by Pamela Garcia
Music arranged by Bobert Batey, Alejo Ortiz, Matt McVinnie, and Daniel Maldonado.

Butoh, a Japanese surrealist art form new to Laredo, is a multi-dimensional dance of death, darkness and existent and non-existent qualias that aims to release the subconscious through expression of movement. The ideas of pain, sickness and trauma were once the inspiration for the creators of Butoh, Kazuo Ohno and Tatsumi Hijikata.

A performance done in India by a group of Butoh Dancers including Pamela Garcia and Japanese Master Rhizome Lee, resonated with a reporter who wrote an article about her experience and the beauty she saw in the expression of pain. Milking Widows transforms past experiences and invocates ancestors to convey the metamorphosis of agony into surrendered bliss. The music and dance are performed intuitively allowing a co-creation of experience to become one consciousness.

Performances will take place at Gallery 201, 513 San Bernardo Ave. on Saturday and Sunday, April 11 & 12 at 7:30pm.
There will be limited seating.
Tickets are $25 pre-sale only
